MEDIA ALERT: LHR sends condolences to the family of advocate Jules Browde

Today we awoke to the news of the passing of one of our founding members, advocate Jules Browde. We would like to join many others who knew advocate Jules Browde in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing we can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

Advocate Jules Browde, who had a career spanning over 50 years will be remembered not only as our founding member, but also for his key contributions in the realization of human rights in South Africa. Rudolph Jansen, former director of Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) says that "I joined LHR and worked a lot with the advocate, that experience played such an important role in my understanding and passion for human rights issues".

In his career, Jules Browde, represented former African National Congress presidents Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, and other anti-apartheid activists. He also served as an acting judge in South Africa, and was a judge in the Appeal Courts of Swaziland and Lesotho.

He is also a recipient of a number of awards, including the Sydney and Felicia Kentridge Award for Service to Law in Southern Africa and the Helen Suzman Lifetime Achievement Award from the South African Jewish Report.

LHR sends its deepest condolences to his family and friends
